  • Exploring Drone Aerodynamics With Computers

For decades, NASA has used computer models to simulate the flow of air around aircraft in order to test designs and improve the performance of next-generation vehicles. At NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, researchers recently used this technique to explore the aerodynamics of a popular example of a small, battery-powered drone, a modified DJI Phantom 3 quadcopter. This simulation reveals the complex motions of air due to interactions between the vehicle’s rotors and X-shaped frame during flight. In the video, airflow interactions are shown as undulating lines. Pressure changes are shown using color. Areas of high pressure are red; low are blue. Come along for a Hubsan X4 Pro FPV exploration flight of the abandoned Nadeau Magnolia mining camp. The H109S X4 Pro is a great GPS FPV explorer, good for video surveying of large tracts of land. This is the basic version, without stabilized gimbal. Find it here http://www.gearbest.com/rc-quadcopters/pp_330810.html?wid=21&lkid=10251186 Pro's - Long range (1000m) range of both quadcopter control and FPV video transmission. - Large 7000mah battery for long endurance (over 25 minutes) flying. - 1080p remote controlled video camera. - Telemetry including GPS status, range, speed, height, remaining battery power, quadcopter position (latitude/longitude) - Flight modes include GPS Position Hold, Altitude Hold, Headless Mode, Return to Home/Landing. This quadcopter is a real speed demon in Altitude Hold mode. - This basic version includes single axis (non-stabilized) remote controlled gimbal, another fixed gimbal for mounting camera phones, and an automatic emergency parachute recovery system (recommended if flying over property or people). Parachute recovery system does not come with the higher end gimbal equipped X4's due to weight limitations (can't safely simultaneously carry the parachute system and a heavy stabilized gimbal). Con's - Requires FAA registration. - FPV screen is somewhat small. Can use third party goggles and screens to view real time aerial video, but telemetry information may not be viewable with such. - Does not come with SD card and card reader. Must purchase separately. - Parachute recovery system weighs close to 200 grams. If not needed (example flights over empty fields), recommend not installing to save weight and improve flight performance. Flyability has taken part in an expedition that marks a new milestone in cave exploration. For the first time, a drone has been used - for a scientific purpose - to explore the area of a cave that would have been otherwise inaccessible or too dangerous for a human to explore. OpenROV is a drone of sorts that travels deep into the waters and can be directed by a laptop, giving those controlling it on land a close up view of what's down there. Undersea exploration can be expensive and dangerous, leaving many otherwise interested parties on the shore with only their dreams. The developers of OpenROV say that for the relatively small investment 849 dollars, those left behind can make their underwater wishes come true. OpenROV is a drone of sorts that travels deep into the waters and can be directed by a laptop, giving those controlling it on land a close up view of what's down there. It's also a community of like-minded people, who share software, ideas, and underwater images with one another. The concept was developed by a NASA intern and kindred soul who was at the time between jobs. Both believed that affordable deep-sea sightseeing was possible, but weren't sure how many others would be into it. They put their plan up on Kickstarter and within hours had pulled in the entire 20 thousand dollars they needed. Now, they sell the robot kits and manage the community of contributors. They also offer instructions on how to source materials and build you own, complete with supply list and assembly guidance.

Welcome to the ghost town of Tokio, Texas. At once a bustling town of around 125 people, it is now virtually empty. I decided to take a quick flight around the old school building with my Tiny Whoop. The school was closed in 1941 and has sat rotting ever since.
